Cedars Primary School

Respect, Honesty, Kindness, Pride, Ambition

Statement of Intent

At Cedars, art and design is used to enable pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to communicate their thoughts and ideas across the curriculum. All pupils will be taught art, craft and design to engage, inspire and challenge them. Their developing knowledge, skills and understanding will equip them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils become artists and designers, they will be taught to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Through cross-curricular work pupils will learn that art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

In the Early Years Art and Design is taught through experiential learning opportunities linked to topics and stories giving the children a wealth of experiences to draw on as they move into KS1.

In KS1 and 2 children are taught Art and Design following a language rich themed curriculum using the Lancashire Plans as a basis from which to teach them the necessary progressive skills to enable them to express their inspirations.
